This is an intermediate workshop for users of the IBM p690. The workshop covers the following topics:

Review Topics for the IBM pSeries
- The IBM System and Programming Environments
  - Useful AIX Commands and System Tools
  - AIX memory Models
- IBM Compilers
  - Source/Assembler Listings, Generating Efficient Hardware Instructions, Error Trapping
- Profiling using tprof
- Techniques for Debugging Serial and Parallel Programs
  - dbx, pdbx, and TotalView
   
Distributed Memory Programming
- IBM Parallel Operating Environment, MPE, Jumpshot
- IBM MP Profiler: Parallel Profiling Libraries for MPI
- IBM TurboMP Library Shared Memory Programming
 
Shared Memory Programming
- OpenMP, Posix Threads (Pthreads)
- Tools: DPOMP, POMPROF
- Hybrid MPI/OpenMP Programming on IBM Parallel Systems
 
Tools for Processor Optimization
- Profiling with Xprofiler
- Using Hardware Performance Counters Efficiently: the HPM Toolkit
- Visualization of Performance Data: PeekPERF
- Understanding Memory Subsystem Utilization: SiGMA

The workshop format is lecture/discussion along with hands-on experience. A computer lab will be available for the hands-on session.

Intended Audience

The intended audience includes users of NCSA's supercomputers - students, postdoctoral staff, faculty, and staff. Enrollment is limited, so priority will be given to users with current IBM p690 allocations.

Location

The workshop will be held at NCSA, 1901 South First Street, Champaign, Illinois (Building Z - located in quadrant G2 on the UIUC campus map). The lecture sessions will also be offered via the Access Grid. Contact training@ncsa.uiuc.edu for more information on Access Grid participation.
