Database Programmer

Overview:

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign, has one Database Programmer (Academic Hourly) position available. The primary function of the Database Programmer is to work with others in the Data Insights group to provide very high-performance database capabilities for scientific user communities. The programmer will work on a variety of science projects crossing multiple disciplines, such as Engineering, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Agriculture, Social Science, etc. The programmer is also responsible for developing efficient database applications which usually involve complex and intensive computations. The programmer will manage very large scientific databases, which require high availability, high scalability and high reliability. In addition, the programmer is also responsible for supporting scientific database users who may or may not have computer science knowledge. With the knowledge and experience on programming (especially on Java programming) and database management (especially on Oracle database management), the programmer will play an important role on database application development.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science or other scientific field is required. Alternate degree fields may be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to current NCSA technologies.
  • Previous software development experience is required. Experience with Oracle database applications is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Java and SQL is required. Experience with JSP, JavaScript, Oracle's PL/SQL is desired.
  • Previous database administration experience, especially with Oracle databases, is preferred.
  • Experience with database development tools, including web-service interface tools is desired.
  • Experience working with scientific user communities is desired.

Due to this position's limited project funding, current NCSA employees would be transferred internally at their same rate of pay/campus approved title (subject to management approval). For non-NCSA personnel, this position may also be filled on an academic/grad type basis.
