How do I apply?
Applicants are asked to email their resumes and other materials to career@ncsa.uiuc.edu. The search number(s) should be included in the subject line and it would also be helpful to include where you learned about the position within your cover letter. Resumes are accepted in several different formats and you will be contacted in the unlikely event that we experience technical troubles with your submission.

It is not necessary to submit multiple resumes to NCSA when you are interested in more than one position. Submit one resume and indicate the search number(s) and position(s) for which you would like to be considered.

Can I fax my resume to NCSA?
We prefer not to receive resumes via the fax as they are more difficult to scan into our resume database system.

How does your employment process work?
Typically, the NCSA Human Resources office receives applicant resumes and then forwards the application data to the designated search committees of the specific searches that you requested. The members of each search committee operate as a team to review applicants, conduct interviews, and select the final candidate. The primary roles of the NCSA Human Resources office are to facilitate information flow between the applicants and the search committee(s) and to ensure an equitable and consistent search process.

Where are your employment opportunities located?
The majority of our job vacancies exist in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. However, we do occasionally have opportunities in other geographic areas. This is situational, depending upon the project or job to be completed. The advertisements for positions outside of Champaign-Urbana will indicate where specific opportunities are located.

What information do you require to determine if my qualifications fit your hiring needs?
A thorough resume is a good start. Ideally, your resume is most helpful if it contains the following elements:

  • Complete name and contact information for you
  • Complete listing of all skills
  • Educational background, including current degree(s) held and degree-granting institutions
  • Continuing education such as workshops or seminars
  • Any relevant and significant project experience

We also require that you provide us with three references at the time you apply. Generally, references are not contacted until the committee has selected the individuals they wish to review more extensively.

Your resume may also be reviewed and possibly submitted to other applicable search committees, should your qualifications match the requirements for another current vacancy.

What majors are you interested in for technical hires?
The majority of NCSA technical hires are in the areas of electrical engineering, computer science, or management information systems, although information technology work experience and/or training may also be considered depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to current NCSA technologies.

Depending upon the area of research required for a specific division, project, or grant, NCSA may also recruit and/or hire individuals with various scientific and technical backgrounds including materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, biology, etc.

When will I hear from you?
You will typically receive an acknowledgement email from NCSA Human Resources, stating that your resume has been processed, within one to two working days after our office has received your resume. If a committee wishes to speak with you regarding a position, they will contact you directly.

What benefits do NCSA employees receive?
As a member of the University of Illinois staff, you will find we offer a competitive salary and benefits package. For details on University benefits, go to http://www.uihr.uillinois.edu/panda-cf/benefits/index.cfm.

What is an Academic Professional?
Academic professionals are those members of the University staff whose positions have been designated by the President and the Chancellor as meeting specialized administrative, professional, or technical needs, in accordance with Article IX of the University of Illinois Statutes. The NCSA Human Resources office generally recruits for Academic Professional positions (Visiting and Regular); civil service vacancies that may occur within NCSA are coordinated in conjunction with the Personnel Services Office.

What are the typical salary ranges for new NCSA employees?
Salaries at NCSA are commensurate with experience and will vary from job to job. Questions related to salary should be directed to the search committee chair during the interview process.

Who can I contact if I have questions?
You may contact the NCSA HR office at 217-265-0618 for general employment information. Questions may also be sent to career@ncsa.uiuc.edu, where they will be directed to the appropriate party for a response.
